The effects of the densification of mining generate significant impacts on the environment and trigger conflicts with society. Regarding the development of the practice of Environmental Impact Assessment, there has been a growing perception of incorporating new tools into the environmental planning process to assess the resulting impacts. As a central objective, the bases of the Strategic Environmental Assessment were researched, in order to subsidize its application in mining plans, adopting the Ribeira Valley - SP as a case study. The research consisted of a bibliographic and field survey, with the application of a questionnaire with representatives of agencies involved with the theme and subsequently, the treatment and systematization of the data obtained. As a result, a methodology for the scope phase of the Strategic Environmental Assessment and guidelines for the Term of Reference for the Ribeira Valley Mining Plan were proposed, aiming at the integration of mining activities into the regional planning.
