Abstract

This work aimed to analyze the formation in the Normal School in Alagoas in the imperial period. It also sought to present some reflections about the teacher education in Brazil through the Compendium of Pedagogical Practice by Joaquim José de Araujo. The work was made possible through a methodological operation based on the reading and analysis of primary sources in accordance with the discussions about the history of the teaching profession in Brazil. The Compendium by Joaquim José de Araujo is understood as ideal type formation of teachers governed and obedient to the social order established by the Brazilian elite. Only little by little a more critical teacher training will emerge throughout the country.
