Irregular solid waste disposal can cause significant damage to ecosystems, polluting groundwater, impacting ecological niches and causing loss of biodiversity. In view of this scenario, this study aimed to investigate how solid waste management has been carried out in Conservation Units. To this end, a survey of the management plans of 32 Conservation Units was carried out, out of a total of 55 located in the State of Rio de Janeiro. With these data, it is possible to suggest management and environmental education strategies in solid waste management in other Conservation Units managed by the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation. As well as in conservation areas in other countries that still do not have concrete actions on this topic. From this analysis, actions related to solid waste management were identified that are in line with Law No. 12,305/10, which instituted the National Solid Waste Policy, and that may be implemented in other Conservation Units, for example, the installation of selective collection dumps, the carrying out of educational campaigns on solid waste on days of high visitation and identifying the different types of waste in order to make public use compatible with environmental preservation.Downloads
