Abstract

The constant growth of the global population has revealed the demand for sustainable agricultural solutions to face the large-scale production of fresh food. This article investigates the benefits of implementing vertical farms as a sustainable model of food production in cities. In this study, we sought to understand the positive impacts of vertical farms implemented in consolidated urban areas, through the historical contextualization of vertical urban agriculture, the collection and analysis of scientific data that support the emergence of new agricultural production technologies in urban areas, and the identification of technical constraints that favor indoor cultivation. The methodology adopted includes the literature review and the analysis of a brazilian vertical farm placed in São Paulo/SP: the Pink Farms. The results point to the benefits of new methods of growth such as energy and land optimization, but also the ecological, social and landscape limitations of vertical farms.
