Several regulations of energy and environmental efficiency have been applied for the built heritage certification. This study aimed to compare the criteria required by two prominent building codes in Brazil: RTQ-C (Technical Quality Regulation for the Energy Efficiency Level of Commercial, Service and Public Buildings) and LEED applied to an existing public school building. It was found that meeting the prerequisites for maximum classification by the RTQ-C is insufficient to enable LEED's minimum certification. For that, construction adjustment would be necessary, which could add about 2.54% to the cost of construction of the building. Therefore, this study showed academic relevance, by encouraging the development of scientific research on sustainability in universities, and practical contribution, by identifying a solution to a real problem. The methodology serves as a basis for similar studies
