The objective of this work is to discuss the application of statistical instruments as a way to diagnose the profile of students, aiming at the adoption of tutoring and guidance strategies that are able to minimize the high dropout and failure rates in distance learning courses in the country. For that, we will use a quantitative approach based on three questionnaires applied to the course participants of the Specialization Course in Education in Digital Culture (ECD), which was offered by the Ministry of Education at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) to a group of 838 educators. Of the students entering the project, 205 were approved, 71 ended up giving up and 562 were disapproved, which meant that the project had registered an average of 73% in relation to the dropout/fail rate. According to our analyses, we verified the possibility of using research tools to guide guidance/tutoring practices aimed at reducing dropout and failure rates in courses offered in the distance learning modality.
