Integrated management of municipal solid waste (MSW) is justified because of exhaustion and commitment to natural resources, social, environmental and economic problems of disposal. The deficiency of MSW management services has generated negative impacts on the living conditions and well-being of the population. Noting the environmental impacts that the MSW can cause and the precariousness of the current situation in a number of Brazilian municipalities, are required to improve their management, increase efficiency and reduce costs, collaborating with the preservation of the environment. The present work aims at presenting the major technologies of the management, enhancement, and/or disposal of MSW treatment used in Brazil and point some municipalities in southern Brazil with efficient management models. The methodology consisted of a bibliographical review about the main advantages and disadvantages of the technologies, addressing a concept, characteristics and process economics. Also been researched articles on the subject and municipalities with effective management models in the southern region. It is concluded that the municipalities are thrusters of the socio-economic development and should adopt the guidelines adopted in order to implement its actions in this area, being the Brazilian solid waste Policy a guiding instrument.Downloads
