Abstract

It starts with the assumption that the performance with small children came shaping up as a profession relegated to the woman, based on arguments that show her as the more competent person to exercise this function, staying in the background the understanding which the formation that enables the professional to work in early childhood education. To discuss these issues, we started from a theoretical study, and then questionnaires were applied to parents and teachers of two Municipal Early Childhood Education Centers (CMEI in Portuguese acronym). With the analysis of the responses was possible identify, in a way, the recognition of the competence of both male and female professionals working with children in early childhood education. However, on the other hand, it still exists a strangeness about the possibility of men took this task.
