Abstract

This paper takes as its starting point the Law 10.639/03, which establishes the compulsory teaching of African and African-Brazilian history and culture in educational institutions. Then, it goes back to the early twentieth century to understand how Negroes were treated in textbooks from that time, a period when legislation for these school supplies was consolidated in the country. At the same time, with the decline of racial theories in Brazil, it was intended to create a nation where all Brazilians would have a common identity. The object of research is the book of History of Brazil Nossa Patria: narração dos factos da História do Brasil, atraves da sua evolução com muitas gravuras explicativas, by Rocha Pombo (1925), whose publication was strong in schooling in the first half of twentieth century.
