Abstract

This article aims to discuss gender relations from reports of teachers which work in Basic Education in Tubarão town, SC. The survey was performed with 10 teachers which belong to the municipal and state education as part of Basic Education. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews performed in November 2011, and it was part of a larger project about conditions of teaching in Santa Catarina; however, given the chance to examine them to observe the intersections between genders, teaching and professional choice, this work was produced. The axes on which the analysis has guided on the intrinsic factors that can be defined as vocation, transmitting values, teacher social function, like by profession and love for children, and extrinsic factors such as economics or the lack of options to choose that led them to choose teaching as a profession.
