The present study aimed to describe the effects of sugarcane agroindustry from colonization to the present day, considering possible advances in social, economic and environmental aspects in terms of the sustainability of sugarcane production in Brazil. The methodology was of an exploratory and qualitative nature through bibliographicalresearch, consisting mainly of books and scientific articles available in the databases of Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), Google Scholar and Digital Library of
the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES). The final considerations point out that although there have been many advances on sugarcane activity over time, the discourse on sustainability that has been adopted by the sector has not been consistent. The conclusions point out that the changes have helped the industry in times of crisis, to the detriment of degrading labor relations and indifference to the mitigation of environmental impacts.
