Abstract

The present article is the result of an ethnographic research at a Centro de Umbanda in Florianópolis, specifically about a Gongar, a small temple with images of saints and orixás, and other ritualistic objects. It also deals with important issues relating to prejudice and segregation against black populations in Brazil, and includes the first academic record of the presence of black communities, quilombolas, in the State of Santa Catarina.
