This paper aims to shed light on the challenges inherent in the process of teaching
and learning Portuguese as a host language for migrants and refugees. For this purpose, we
have benefited from our experience as members of Unisul Embracing the Migrant Project as
well as the debates around language, culture and listening found within the dialogue between
the French Discourse Analysis (AD) framework and other fields of study. Based on our
experience assisting people who were forced to flee their homes, we aim to think through the
complexities surrounding the foreign language teaching and learning process, to contribute
to a better understanding of immigration in Brazil.
