Abstract

The present essay focuses on the presence of the Portuguese poet Luís de Camões in the first three poetry books by Machado de Assis, namely Crisálidas (1864), Falenas (1870) e Americanas (1875). In addition to collecting epigraphs from the Portuguese poet’s poems while giving him credit, the Brazilian writer sometimes took profit of suggestions from that poetry and used them in his own poems, as this study shall demonstrate.
