Abstract

The article intends to connect three Brazilian movies exploring the same universe: the big cities garbage deposits. The films are Ilha das flores (1989) by Jorge Furtado; Boca de lixo (1992) by Eduardo Coutinho; and Estamira (2004) by Marcos Prado. With radically different regards on the same reality, this trilogy presents at least one common characteristic: the indistinctness between documentary and fiction in the name of a major opposition between cinema and journalism, as suggested by Jean-Louis Comolli.
