Abstract

Joachim Lang's film on The Threepenny Opera (1928) follows Brecht's struggles as he attempted to adapt his famous opera in the early 1930s. Brecht and Kurt Weill, the composer of the film’s score, signed a contract with Nero-Film to produce a film version of it but the film never happened. Accused of being a plagiarist and a troublemaker, Brecht always took these labels as a compliment. His analysis of the process moved beyond the litigation itself to unpack questions about the relationships between art, law and commerce.
