November memories

Abstract

Toru Takemitsu's concert November Steps, for shakuhachi, biwa and orchestra, poses an epistemological challenge by eliciting memories of moments which did not necessarily occur. In this essay, I propose a reading of the concert along these lines, taking Bergson's concept of duration as a starting point.
