Abstract

In this text, we aim to comprehend the functioning of the discursive representation of the other as a communist on the eve of the Brazilian 1964 coup and its reproduction throughout n the first five years of the military period. Anchored in Pêcheutian Discourse Analysis, we conduct the interpretive process using categories such as imaginary formation, discursive memory, and discursive formation. The corpus of analysis consisted of ten discursive sequences extracted from the seventeen Institutional Acts (AIs) published in these years. We observed in these sequences that the image of the other as a communist constitutes a network of meanings that, nurtured since the beginning of the 20th century, is reinterpreted according to the interests of the hegemonic class and updated in each Institutional Act as state repression intensified.
