This article is the result of a research whose objective was to investigate how the genre category is approached in dissertations and theses in the field of Linguistics. It is mainly based on socio-rhetorical (BAZERMAN, 2015; BHATIA, 1993; MILLER, 2009; SWALES, 1990), on dialogic theory (BAKHTIN, 2003; BAKHTIN; VOLOCHINOV, 2009) and on textual studies (MARCUSCHI, 2008; 2010). This is a quantitative-qualitative research, based on the documentary analysis of a corpus consisting of abstracts and introductions of theses and dissertations in Linguistics defended at the Federal University of XXXXXXXX, Brazil, between 1991 and 2017. The analysis indicates that the investigated works focus on genres several, in different discursive spheres, whose research focus varies between the description of the genre and its pedagogical application; that research is predominantly affiliated with textual studies or applied linguistics; and that Bakhtin and Marcuschi are two theoretical consensuses in the analyzes undertaken.
