Abstract

Aim: To estimate and compare serum ?2-microglobulin levels in oral leukoplakia and oral squamous cell carcinoma patients with that of control group.

Material and Methods: The study was carried out on 70 subjects divided into three groups (20 oral leukoplakia patients, 30 oral squamous cell carcinoma patients and 20 controls). Serum ?2-microglobulin was estimated by an enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).

Results: A significant increase in serum levels of ?2-microglobulin was observed in oral squamous cell carcinoma patients as compared to control group.

Conclusions: Results of this study suggest that estimation of serum ?2-microglobulin can be useful in as biomarker for diagnosis of oral squamous cell carcinoma.
