Abstract

Introduction: Recurrent bladder disorders in women decrease the quality of life, brings dysfunctions in activities of daily living and mental disorders. Acupuncture has been used as a complementary treatment to solve the problem and control pain. Objectives: To contextualize current knowledge about recurrent bladder disorders and expand the analysis of the problem through the wisdom of Traditional Chinese Medicine (Acupuncture), with the theory of the Elements and concept of Shen (Wills and Emotions). Methods: Literature review of scientific bases BVS, PUBMED and SCOPUS (Acupuncture AND Painful Bladder Syndrome OR Cystitis OR Urinary Tract Infection); and in renowned books/authors: Nan Jing, Su Wen, Ling shu, Soulié de Morant, Rochat de La Vallée and Larre. Analysis through hermeneutic narrative interpretation. Results: Acupuncture can collaborate to decrease the residual volume, the number of infections, suppress bladder contraction and change the urinary urgency neurological centers. Points for treatment were systematized according to manifestations of imbalance. The bladder is associated with the generation of the will to life, fear and emotions, anchored by the water element. Final considerations: The bladder is more than storage and excretion viscera. It composes an energy producing system, acting on vitality and nervous centers, with the function of separating impurities in the physical, emotional and mental aspects. Knowing the dynamics of vitality and Shen, which feed the essences, is crucial for understanding chronic or intermittent manifestations of the bladder.
