Abstract

The positive perception of the port cluster by the local communities is a competitive advantage ande eases the port’s social license of operation and expansion. We aim towards understanding the economic, social and ambiental practices of the port managers which influence the perception of local communities and reassure the sustainable development of the port cluster. We have defined the sustainable port practices, measured its impacts in the perception of local communities and verified the moderating influence of the regional characteristics and of the port cluster. The inquiry sent to the port stakeholders and Portuguese citizens was used. A sample of 262 answers sustains the methodology based on the model of structural equations (MSE). The results indicate the importance of the port practices of its own impact control in the region, communication of the port with the region, participation of the region in the port’s management and the port’s investment in the region, to assess their influence in the local communities.
